Happy Halloween guys! It's the season for trick or treating again. But unfortunately, because of the pandemic we are facing, Trick 'r' Treat is indefinitely suspended because it's too risky. But do not fret! There's a much safer alternative to that. Just pop some popcorn and eat your candies in front of a TV this year because we are going to recommend some horror goodies for you to binge-watch this November.

Note: Halloween costumes while watching aren't required but it is encouraged. LOL Also the films are in no order.

Grave Encounters (2011)

This movie follows the crew of a paranormal reality television program who lock themselves in a haunted psychiatric hospital in search of evidence of paranormal activity as they shoot what ends up becoming their final episode.

I will only recommend the part one. They shouldn’t have made another one. The second one was A-W-F-U-L. Considering the budget for this film was only $120,000 it’s actually pretty decent if you ignore the unlikable stupid characters. When the characters decide to lock themselves in an abandoned mental hospital where they eventually feel the wrath of the spirits they were provoking, you’ll really feel no remorse for them. But still, there’s something enjoyable about watching people in a horror movie making evidently bad decisions.-Anne

I think this is my most enjoyed horror documentary film because of the exciting thrill of ghost hunting at an eerie asylum which made it more realistic through raw camera footage. Also, it’s like you are in a game of outlast or a little bit of silent hill as you will be so surprised and shocked for what that asylum has in store for these characters and you as a viewer!. Regarding the characters, of course, they are the typical foolish people that provoke ghosts in spite it being mental psycho patients and a crazy doctor from the old era doing lobotomies (if there is no brainless character, then there will be no horror films, am I right? hahaha) but in the end, gets a taste of their own medicine (get it cause they are also in an asylum hahah uhm okay). Overall, I loved this movie but just the part 1 because I agree with Anne that they should have not made a part 2 to preserve the realistic scary feels of the first film. - Nina

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (곤지암)

The narrative centers around a horror web series crew that travels to an abandoned asylum for a live broadcast in order to garner views and publicity.

What can I even say about this movie? Haha. Nina and I watched this movie at Market Market in BGC when it was the last film showing of the day. So we watched this around 10 pm-12 am I think? As shown by the Hangul characters above, this is a Korean movie. We really didn’t expect much from this horror movie when we bought the tickets. We just wanted to watch something scary. But OMFG did this movie scared the heck out of us. LOL. I think it was because of the ghost that popped up unexpectedly and to this day I could still remember the face. LOL. Though this movie’s plot is predictable, I will categorize this as a must-watch since this is a great ‘found footage type’ movie that can be pitted against the classics. - Anne

There is nothing scarier than seeing Asian ghosts (who agrees with me?) especially Japanese, Chinese, and even Koreans so presenting Gonjiam: a must-watch horror film representing Asia hahaha. It has been three years since I watched it with Anne but still, the face is hauntingly memorable and you will definitely not miss it while watching so goodluck! hahaha. The characters are once again ignorant people which makes it predictable for what will happen but you still have to watch it because it gives you that curiosity and intense feeling that they are really in for a treat and so are you as a viewer hahaha. - Nina

Hereditary (2018)

A family is haunted by a mysterious presence after the death of their secretive grandmother.

The director of this movie is the same person who directed Midsommar (another one of our recommendations) and I think Ari Aster is quickly making his way up the hearts of horror lovers out there. Ari’s take on horror movies vibes with me so well because of the subtle realistic incorporation of social problems we have today. Although I find Aster’s interest in making cult movies a little disturbing, I can’t deny that it teaches me the fact that we live in a world that all that can be possible which makes his movies eerily brilliant. - Anne

Another disturbing movie aside from midsommar (period) hahaha. Because of this, I am actually starting to become a fan of Ari Aster (the director) because he has a fresh take on horror films. He is showing that jump scares are not the only thing that makes a horror movie scary but the execution, content, and details he carefully shows to make each scene brilliantly terrifying for anyone. That is what he proved here on hereditary that’s why I recommend you watch it. Expect some gore, suspense, and featuring of spiderman in this film as well hahahahaha!

Midsommar (2019)

This movie follows a group of friends who travel to Sweden for a festival that occurs once every 90 years, only to find themselves in the clutches of a pagan cult.

I gotta say, this movie made me think twice about travelling to countries and immersing in their culture. This movie really left me in goosebumps because I know that I’m the type of person to accept a trip invitation and venture into the unknown and learn to embrace the culture of the local people. What I really loved about this movie is its aesthetically pleasing cinematography, admirable direction of Aster, commendable acting of Pugh, the subtle utilization of foreshadowing, and the depiction of how importance a strong support system is to a person struggling with poor mental health. The only thing that I didn’t like about this movie was its length. The movie is very long and there are some unnecessary scenes and dialogues that they could've cut to make it shorter. This movie may not be everyone’s cup of tea since it’s more of a psychological cult thriller (and also you have to listen and watch carefully so that you won’t miss a thing because there’s a chance you’ll miss the foreshadowing and important messages the movie wants to convey). But if you really take the time to watch this, I believe it is worth the watch and as a movie junkie, I highly appreciated this. - Anne

Midsommar was aesthetically pretty and bright for its cinematography and not to mention it was shot in the beautiful mountainous plains of Sweden but be warned because it is so disturbing and dangerous guys. Ari Aster was a genius because the film was like art for me but a disturbing art piece that you have to interpret and it was kinda slow-paced which made it long so I guess it depends on the person if he or she will appreciate it and be patient enough to watch. However, for me who gets bored and sleepy easily, I was captivated by this film and in the end, it was worth my time. I Iiked how it gave light to the struggles of having mental health problems and Florence Pugh did a great job showing us how a person suffers from it. The first part really made me feel dark already guys. Truly a psychological cult thriller that makes you feel a lot of things. I cannot wait for you to see the events that will happen and make you go “whaaaaat the asjeyfij!”., now I even have second thoughts about immersing myself to other cultures especially the ones that are actually nightmare dressed like a daydream (you willl know what I'm saying soon hahah).

Though until now, l still have a question regarding the movie, WHAT DETERGENT DO THEY USE!? (you will find out why this question is relevant) HAHAHA. So buckle up when you arrive at this midsummer festival. - Nina

Oculus (2013)

A young woman sets out to prove that an antique mirror is responsible for the death and misfortune that her family suffered.

If you’re the type to be afraid of mirrors, than this is the movie that will scare your socks off. I’d have to categorize this as a supernatural psychological horror because it not only messes with your head, it also will make you question the existence of reality. The only con that I didn’t like was the constant time jump between the siblings’ past and the one inconsistency in the ending. - Anne

Of course, antique haunted mirrors are already an attention grabber for horror movie fans like me. Oculus was a film that had me so confused but boatload scared. The characters are dealing with the living and the dead which makes you think would they even survive this!. In the beginning, the story was slow for me but when it progresses, it is a movie with a unique storyline where the characters are not just typically haunted but the characters specifically Kaylie sets up a trap to fight against that antique mirror in the future and prove that the supernatural exists. However, in the end, as the past and future are mashing up, I did not know what to feel like if I should first be scared or baffled but the ghosts were really scary, some scenes were really messed up, and the ending made me speechless.

Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

A widow and her family introduce a Ouija board into their phony seance business, thereby inviting a spirit that possesses the youngest daughter.

Okay so whenever somebody asks me, “Hey Anne, do you know a good horror movie?” I would always tell them to watch this. What made me recommend this movie is because of Doris. I really hate ghost children. They freak me out the most and they’re scarier than older ghosts. Doris’ ghost form scared me more than Valak the nun (Although I didn’t find Valak scary. It was like Ghostface but a nun version lol). This movie can be laughable for some but its jump scares were enough to scare my friends when we watched this (Shoutout to Pearl! Best screamer evah. Haha). This movie actually came after the first one, Ouija. This movie serves as a prequel and I find this more enjoyable than its predecessor which bored me halfway through the movie. But yeah, I recommend this movie and watch it to know what it feels like to be strangled to death (Yikes). - Anne

Ouija Origins of evil was a typical American horror film but it was still scary due to the fact that Doris possessive spirit is terrifying and it was set in 1970's where I was shocked that the Ouija boards were typical board games knowing that it can channel demons. When I watched it with Anne, there were laughable parts you know since we love humor but the film was not bad and corny like others. It was still creepy and scary knowing who the family was up against in the end. - Nina

Stay Alive (2006)

When their close friend passes away, the group decides to play an online game that he was playing the night of his death. But the action taking place on their computer screens becomes a terrifying reality when they realize that each time a character dies during the game, the figure's human overseer dies as well.

I absolutely am a fan of this movie ever since I was a child because of the uniqueness and creativity of its concept. Seriously if I was rich enough to finance a movie, I would personally fund a reboot of this baby. This film is super underrated and it’s criticized for its lack of scares but it’s only because of the poor screenwriting and very poor character development (Abigail annoyed the sh*t out of me). I believe when given a chance to be rebooted with a set of fresh characters, an improved script, and a re-imagined look for Elizabeth Bathory without removing the creative concept of the movie, this film has a chance to be one of the best horror movies of all time. - Anne

Stay Alive has an awesome plot that is sadly underrated which I hope they reboot and enhance it (I support you Anne to finance this in the future hahahah). It is like final destination with one by one you know dying but with an exception of the character staying alive if he or she is still alive in the game hahaha. Since it was shot in 2006, the graphics of the game was still old school but very nostalgic for me, however, it is still scary as there will be jump scares and suspense from not getting killed in the game and in real life. I very much recommend you try and watch it especially with gamer friends that can really relate hahaha. - Nina

The Visit (2015)

The film centers around teenage Becca and her younger brother Tyler who live with their single mother, who left home 15 years ago and is estranged from her parents. After finding their grandchildren online and wanting to meet them, the grandparents invite them to spend a week at their farm, while their mother goes off with her boyfriend. Aspiring filmmaker Becca and her brother Tyler decide to go, and Becca decides to make a documentary of their visit. Strange behaviors and dark, disturbing secrets soon emerge.

If you have grandparents that you’ve never met before, maybe consider not going alone to visit them first. This movie was hair-raisingly disturbing especially for me since I’m living with my grandfather LOL. If you love movies with a plot twist, this one is a must watch for you. All in all I think you won’t be disappointed with this since I’m sure it’ll make you go “WTF” for a few times. - Anne

The visit was one of the movies that made me nervous for my life and wondered what if this happened to me. It shocked me guys because at first, you don't really know what’s gonna happen but all you know that nana (that woman is really creepy) and pop pop are some weird grandparents but as it escalates and that one statement or scene happens, it turned everything around and you go “WTF!” with a meme “the moment you knew they f* up”. I was literally scared for Becca and Tyler. It is not a typical story for a documentary-style movie with shaky cams and a predictable plot like grave encounters or Blair witch but it is freaking unexpected, genius, and oh HD hahaha! - Nina

Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)

This film follows a group of friends who find a laptop that has access to the dark web, only to realize they are being watched by the original owners, a group of cyber-criminal hackers.

This movie surprised me. I didn’t expect to like this movie since the first one was kinda meh for me but it was unexpectedly good. This will definitely hammer the commandment “Thou shall not steal” into your hearts. Although this movie is different from its predecessor because it’s not supernatural in any way, it doesn’t make it less scary. As a matter of fact, I find it even scarier since the events in this movie CAN happen to anyone. And as this movie proves, wherever you are, distance isn’t an issue (You’ll know what I’m talking about when you watch it). - Anne

You are not the only one Anne, I am surprised as well hahaha this movie should not be missed. However, It is not supernatural but I agree that it does not make it less scary due to the fact that it proves the belief of "you should be more scared of the living than the dead" and it is sooo creepy because it can happen to all of us especially during quarantine while we video chats on messenger or zoom hahaha just make sure that laptop is yours *wink*. Also, the execution of the "important scenes" of the characters was mind-blowing and terrifyingly smart!- Nina

The Vatican Tapes (2015)

The haunting tale of Angela Holmes, a girl who begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close to her, but when priests are called from the Vatican to exorcise the demon, it proves to be a Satanic force more powerful than they imagined.

Now this movie creeped me out to the highest level all because of its blasphemous themes. I kid you not when I say don’t watch this when you’re faith is hanging by a thread. In my opinion, this movie garnered very negative reviews in other countries because they are not as religious as us Filipinos. We are mainly a Christian country while many people from other continents do not believe in the existence of God or the devil. But for me, it creeped the crap out of me especially the ending because that event may be happening now. It’s even in the Bible people, come on! Matthew 24:24 and Matthew 7:15! - Anne

Vatican Tapes for me is the movie I would want to keep my eyes closed throughout probably because of the exorcism present here and that really freaks me out. Out of all the films here, this is probably the most terrifying for me because aside from demons possessing someone, this film contains a strong sense of blasphemy due to the fact that it's about the anti (I can’t even say it :( ). Not to mention, the ending gave me goosebumps and I am horrified because it can or is possibly happening to the world.- Nina

As you may have noticed we didn't include the more popular horror movies like Us, Get Out, The Conjuring and others because we wanted to suggest movies that are less likely watched by anybody else to have a fresh list of choices.

We had to limit the list to 10 but here are some of our honorable mentions: The Blackcoat's Daughter, Strangers: Prey at Night, Hush, Sweeney Todd, The Woman in Black, and A Cure for Wellness.
